Netanyahu first became the Israeli Prime Minister from 1996-1999. That is when I first began to contemplate his role in prophetic history. His namesake is found in Jeremiah 41, where his name appears as Nethaniah, an anglicized version of Netanyahu. This chapter focuses specifically on “Ishmael the son of Nethaniah” (Jeremiah 41:1).
The backdrop of the story tells us that “Jerusalem was captured” (Jeremiah 39:1) and Judah’s king Zedekiah had been blinded and taken to Babylon (Jeremiah 39:7). Most of the people had been deported to Babylon, but a few remained in the old land (Jeremiah 40:7). This included Jeremiah himself (Jeremiah 39:14). The Babylonian king set up a governor over them named Gedaliah (2 Kings 25:23).
But Gedaliah was soon murdered by Ishmael the son of Nethaniah (Jeremiah 41:2, 3), along with many other innocent people, and this brought down the wrath of the king of Babylon. Johanan rescued those whom Ishmael had taken captive, but Ishmael himself escaped.
The prophetic significance of this story starts with “Ishmael the son of Nethaniah.” Most people assume that Ishmael represents the Arabs, but in this case, Ishmael was from Judah, not Arabia. The name itself was fairly common in those days. Furthermore, according to the Apostle Paul in Galatians 4:25, Ishmael’s mother was Hagar, who represented the Old Covenant, Mount Sinai, and the earthly Jerusalem.
Hence, Ishmael the son of Hagar appears to be the equivalent of Ishmael the son of Netanyahu. In either case, Ishmael represents the children of the flesh, who are children of the Old Covenant. So today, PM Netanyahu essentially represents the father/mother of the children of the flesh.
In 1996 I took note that Netanyahu, as Prime Minister, was the father of “Ishmael,” that is, the Old Covenant Jews, those who consider Jerusalem to be their “mother.”
So when Netanyahu became Prime Minister in 1996, I suggested that he may be the one who would lead the Israelis into the coming disaster by his warlike mindset. Of course, this did not happen in his first term of office. Yet this inspired me to write my book, The Struggle for the Birthright in 2002.
Netanyahu again became Prime Minister from 2009-2021, and once again I wondered if the great disaster would occur during his second term in office. It did not.
Netanyahu then became Prime Minister again in December 2022 and is in that position today. This time it appears that he will lead the Israeli state into disaster. In my view, he led the plot to induce Hamas to attack Israel and gave the order to the IDF forces to withdraw from the border of Gaza, so that Hamas could inflict sufficient damage to justify the elimination of Gaza itself. In fact, I hear that a poll shows that 86 percent of Israelis themselves believe that the intelligence service knew about the attack ahead of time but did nothing about it. Many are justifiably angry.
Of course, we are still in the early stages of this war. Will it lead to the apocalypse? Time will tell. Meanwhile, we will do our part to warn people and to prevent this disaster if possible.
