In 1859 an old man, 99 years old, reported that George Washington had had a vision during the Revolutionary War while he was at Valley Forge. In it, an angel told him that America would come under three serious threats: (1) the Revolutionary War itself, (2) the War Between the States, which was about to begin in 1861, and (3) a third which, I believe, we are now experiencing.

“Again I heard the mysterious voice saying, ‘Son of the Republic look and learn.’ At this the dark, shadowy angel placed a trumpet to his mouth, and blew three distinct blasts; and taking water from the ocean, he sprinkled it upon Europe, Asia and Africa. Then my eyes beheld a fearful scene. From each of these continents arose thick black clouds that were soon joined into one. And throughout this mass there gleamed a dark red light by which I saw hordes of armed men. These men, moving with the cloud, marched by land and sailed by sea to America, which country was enveloped in the volume of cloud. And I dimly saw these vast armies devastate the whole country and the villages, towns and cities which I had seen springing up.”
“As my ears listened to the thundering of the cannon, clashing of the swords, and the shouts and cries of millions in mortal combat, I again heard the mysterious voice saying, ‘Son of the Republic, look and learn.’ Where the voice had ceased, the dark shadowy angel placed his trumpet once more to his mouth, and blew a long and fearful blast.”
Visions usually involve symbolism in terms of the language that is common to the people. In this case, Washington was shown “thick black clouds” from other continents out of which came “hordes of armed men.” The language gives the appearance of war but not necessarily uniformed soldiers.
Wars used to be fought mainly between uniformed troops from opposing countries. But in recent centuries some wars have been fought through immigration. America itself conquered its land mainly through immigration. The Zionist state is a more recent example. For decades, I have believed that the third war in Washington’s vision was actually an immigration war. Perhaps Washington himself interpreted this in terms of war as he knew it, similar to the war that he was engaged in at Valley Forge. It is also possible that the 99 year old man had made some assumptions in his account. We cannot say for sure.
Most people who comment on this vision assume that this was describing an invasion by Russia or China. But these invaders come “from each of these continents,” which is more than just Asia. In fact, it is said that they “marched by land and sailed by sea to America.” Because of America’s geographic position, bounded by two oceans, the only feasible way to march here by land is to come through Mexico. We know that people from all continents are indeed sailing first to Central America and Mexico and then crossing the border into America.
As for “the thundering of the cannon, clashing of the sword,” no one today would take this literally. It is stated in terms that fit the way wars were fought 200 years ago. It has to be symbolic of war in general, modified by present technology and circumstances.
Such modifications are similar to what we see in various Old Testament prophecies of the future. When the prophets describe the future using Old Covenant terminology, we must interpret it with New Covenant eyes. Hence, Ezekiel’s prophecies about a new temple, complete with animal sacrifices being offered by the priests of Zadok, must be fulfilled in a New Covenant manner. So we have to interpret such things accordingly, rather than believe that the age to come will revert back to Old Covenant practices.
So George Washington’s vision should be interpreted according to the realities of today. And what we are seeing is an explosion of illegal immigrants who are overwhelming our abilities to absorb them. Very few of these immigrants have any concept of what America is all about. They bring with them their own political views (if any), and they are told that America is a democracy where they can immediately vote and have a say in our form of government.
Some group at the top of the political spectrum wants to overwhelm the original idea of a Christian Republic where God is the Author of all rights. The current administration’s policy of unlimited immigration is designed to eradicate God from society and to deny His right to rule His creation.
Fortunately, the vision then shows divine intervention, which ultimately brings peace.
“Again, amid the fearful noise of the conflict I heard the mysterious voice saying, ‘Son of the Republic, look and learn.’ As the voice ceased the shadowy angel for the last time dipped water from the ocean and sprinkled it upon America. Instantly the dark cloud rolled back, together with the armies it had brought, leaving the inhabitants of the land victorious.”
“Then once more, I beheld the villages, towns and cities springing up where I had seen them before, while the bright angel, planting the azure standard he had brought in the midst of them, cried with the loud voice: ‘While the stars remain, and the heaven send down dew upon the earth, so long shall the UNION last.’ And taking from his brow the crown on which blazoned the word ‘UNION,’ he placed it upon the Standard while the people, kneeling down, said ‘Amen.’”
Notice that there is no revelation as to how America comes out “victorious.” There are no heaps of dead bodies to be buried. Just “the dark cloud rolled back, together with the armies it had brought.” Did the armies flee? If so, where did they go? We are not told. But sprinkling water upon America suggests a Holy Spirit revival in accordance with Ezekiel 36:25,
25 Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. 26 Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances.
This is a national promise, which, of course, also applies individually. But the angel was said to sprinkle water on the country itself, which is the same as Ezekiel’s prophecy. It is clear that this outpouring is designed to bring an end to the idolatry and uncleanness in the nation. Ezekiel 36:33 concludes,
33 Thus says the Lord God, “On the day that I cleanse you from all your iniquities, I will cause the cities to be inhabited, and the waste places will be rebuilt.”
Although Washington’s vision spoke of difficult times, it ended with the promise of victory, not merely a military victory, but a victory on account of repentance and the Holy Spirit—which alone can end the war and turmoil. Few details are given, but it is my belief that these immigrants (presently “illegal”) will receive this baptism of the Holy Spirit, simply because they will be here when that event happens. They too will learn to obey God’s statutes and ordinances, and they will learn His form government where God is the Author of all rights.
