LONDON, Feb 15 (Reuters) - Britain's economy fell into a recession in the second half of 2023, a tough backdrop ahead of this year's expected election for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak who has promised to boost growth.
Gross domestic product (GDP) contracted by 0.3% in the three months to December, having shrunk by 0.1% between July and September, official data showed.
The fourth-quarter contraction was deeper than all economists' estimates in a Reuters poll, which had pointed to a 0.1% decline.
If you are wondering why the US economy is not in an official recession, it is because its GDP grows every time the government borrows more money. The borrowed money is spent into the economy and is included in the GDP figures as if the economy is growing and doing fine.
More than that, since we sanctioned Russian oil and gas, and forced the EU to do the same, now EU countries have to buy liquid natural gas (LNG) from the US, which costs them about 4 times as much money. US companies are benefiting at Europe’s expense.
How long can this last? Germany is being de-industrialized, because it is no longer competitive. Its companies are moving to China, causing more unemployment. The EU and even NATO is being de-militarized after sending most of their arms to Ukraine where they are quickly used or destroyed. Europe would be helpless if Russia decided to attack. Fortunately, Putin has no interest in invading or occupying Europe. He wants to do business with them, but the EU refuses to do so.
